Mining operations depend on continuous visibility, reliable equipment performance, and strong site safety. This case study highlights how ToughEye 1700 self-cleaning cameras are being used across mining applications to improve situational awareness, reduce breakdowns, increase equipment utilization, and support safer operations in harsh environments.
ToughEye cameras use a micro-renewable optical layer that self-cleans the lens without wipers. The system is effective against abrasive dust, mud, oil, and ice, including self-thawing in temperatures as low as -40°C. The cameras are rated for 40,000 cleaning cycles and can also include integrated lighting.
Drill Rig Vision
One of Canada’s largest mining companies improved site safety and optimized uptime on its drill rigs through the use of ToughEye 1700 self-cleaning cameras. The cameras were deployed to provide operators and site personnel with improved visibility at critical points on the drill rig.
These camera views included:
- an eagle’s view of the deck, including the fork and breakout wrench
- monitoring of the drill hole
- view over the rear motor for fire monitoring
- installation at the top of the mast to monitor the flag for wind direction
- improved situational awareness for impediments and tramming
These placements helped eliminate issues such as dropped steel while improving both operating confidence and safety around the rig.
Mill and Crusher Vision
ToughEye cameras are also being used by mining companies in Western Canada and the United States to improve visibility in material handling and processing applications. In these environments, cameras help maintain continuous awareness in areas that are often affected by dust, frost, steam, and poor lighting.
Applications in mill and crusher environments include:
- conveyor monitoring at transfer points, belts, and magnets
- stacker and stockpile monitoring
- reduction of visibility issues caused by frost, steam, and dust
- continuous monitoring of crushers, screens, and surge bins
- overloading and underloading monitoring at loading bays
- use of integrated lighting in dark or confined areas
Haul Truck Vision
A major North American coal producer experienced near misses that were mitigated through better situational awareness and improved rear visibility using the ToughEye 1700 camera.
In haul truck applications, the cameras supported:
- improved mobile fleet safety awareness
- backup camera visibility to help prevent tire damage from driving over sharp rock
- reduced unwanted interaction with berms
- integration with the dispatch system when the truck is reversing
- continuous 360-degree operator view
- reduced need for in-situ visual inspection in autonomous hauling environments
These improvements helped reduce risk while supporting more efficient and controlled truck movement in active mine settings.
Dozer Vision
One of North America’s leading phosphate producers deployed ToughEye cameras on Komatsu 155AX dozers to support safer removal of raw material from under the stacker.
With five camera views installed, the dozers could be operated from an automation centre. This allowed personnel to work from a safer vantage point and eliminated the need for workers to approach the equipment to clean the cameras manually.
Why ToughEye Fits Mining Environments
ToughEye cameras are positioned as a simple, low-cost, continuous vision safety and awareness solution for dirty, dusty, and greasy locations. The cameras integrate with existing OEM displays and can be configured for IP or analogue systems, with remote visibility available through the site network.
The vast majority of ToughEye cameras installed to date are still in operation after as much as seven years and more than 300,000 cleaning cycles. The system requires zero maintenance, with no fluid lines, air hoses, or manual cleaning.
